Texas Education Freedom Accounts

TEFA Application window will be open February 4, 2026 - March 17, 2026.

We are in consultation with the Texas Private School Association (TPSA), other Texas District Lutheran schools, and schools across the country operating with school choice programs. We continue to learn more about operating school choice in Texas and will be relaying information to our families as we learn more.

Lutheran South Academy & Westlake Lutheran Academy are planning on carefully implementing Texas Education Freedom Accounts for the 2026-2027 school year for current and newly admitted students.

Each campus will maintain our high admissions standards. Although we maintain control of our admissions process, LSA/WLA have no control over which students or families receive funding. All Texas Education Freedom Accounts funding decisions are made by the state of Texas

The state of Texas has allocated a limited amount of funds for the 2026-2027 school year. It is likely that all applicants will not receive funding.

Senate Bill 2 (SB2) allows us to maintain total religious freedom and operational autonomy.

Will LSA/WLA accept Texas Education Freedom Account dollars?

When will applications open?

If I receive state funds, am I guaranteed enrollment?

How is the state distributing funds?

The Texas Comptroller announced the selection of Odyssey as the certified educational assistance organization that will assist the Comptroller in administering the program. Odyssey will build and manage a new online parent portal to guide families through the application process, allow them to search for eligible schools and service providers, and access their account to pay for eligible education expenses. Additional information about applications and timelines for families, education service providers, and vendors of educational products will be announced in the coming weeks.

Are current families eligible for funds?

Is State funding replacing the school’s current financial aid?

Not necessarily. It is doubtful that all deserving students will receive State funding. In addition, funding might not meet the entire needs of a family. In these cases, school tuition assistance may still be provided for those who financially qualify. In some cases, State funds will totally replace school financial aid. All students who receive school financial aid must apply for State funds.

Will new state funded students negatively affect the culture of the school?

Is there anything LSA/WLA can do to help families get State funding?

If I receive freedom account funds from the state, what can I use those for?

LSA/WLA’s tuition rates exceed the state’s general Texas Education Freedom Account dollar amount. All general State funding will go towards tuition payments. Students with diagnosed learning differences whose Texas Education Freedom Account award goes above tuition rates can use funding for fees or other appropriate expenses. State funds will not cover all of a families tuition expense. Families will always fund some portion of tuition.

Does LSA/WLA enroll students with learning differences?

Please, make an appointment with the campus of your interest and bring all paperwork with diagnostic information with you. LSA/WLA admits students with some diagnosed learning differences. Each school’s Principals or Heads of Schools make that determination.

Students with diagnosed learning disabilities that receive funds above our tuition rates can use funding for other expenses. The parents/guardians and school administration will work together to formulate a plan for those funds.

Although we maintain control of our admissions process, Lutheran South Academy & Westlake Lutheran Academy have no control over which students or families receive Texas Education Freedom Account funding. All funding decisions are made by the state of Texas.
